Welcome to the
THE COMBAT DIVER History Project
Combat Divers are Canadian Army Engineers trained for underwater operations. Their basic diver training is conducted by the Navy. We need your photos, stories, memories and unit dive team histories as part of the 45th activity program. Sapper divers, current and retired, you are now the editor to help coordinate our history project, this concerns stories and events that happened over the last 45 years, social events and fundraisers. 99% of the site is open to you as a supporter of the Canadian Army and our Armed Forces.
THE COMBAT DIVER History Project
Background:
For many years now the Combat Divers Association (CDAC) has envisaged a published collection of army diving experiences within the CF. As no official history of Combat Diving has been written the CDAC would like to attempt to document the story of the evolution of Combat Diving. Rather than the traditional recounting of dry engineer facts (CME Vols I,II,III), a more personal approach from the individuals involved will be attempted. Material submitted (but not used) for CME Vol III and material amassed over the ten years of Army Diver Times and CDAC website will form the basis of the collection. It is intended to flesh out this material with input from all divers through this interactive website.
Scope:
The format of the information is as indicated on the website organization. From the origins of army diving through the establishment of the official army diving capability; the evolution through CDLF to SWDLF to Combat Diver; the establishment of combat diving as an Army entity; the important small unit exchanges and international diver experiences and training; the critical role of Roguish Buoy; development of combat diver badges, coins, Army Diver Times and CDAC through to the formation of the Army Dive center and to the current situation based on the scaling back of the Afghanistan operation.
Critical Inputs :
What is missing is basic individual course photos. Although nominal roles exist for all courses up until 1976 and the ARMY Diver Times covers the period 1991- 2000 inputs and photos are required from all. Similarly unit dive histories are required to outline unit based activities, exercises operations and individuals. 4 Fd Sqn history has been posted to the website as an example.
