But in the first six minutes the whole course of the action
changed: the heavy going at the start slowed up
the advancing waves so that when the barrage made
its first lift to 75 yards beyond the German front
line we lost its protection for the day. And in these first six minutes ten of our eleven
officers in the attack were hit: Sare, Ross, Joy, Rooke
and Taylor killed; Sinclair, Law, Planche,
Simmons and Yonkles wounded.
